10.06.2009 - Limited MINI special edition evokes the birth of the brand and John Cooper’s Formula One title victory 50 years ago. Munich. Both were revolutionary and triumphant: in the summer of 1959 Alec Issigonis presented his concept for a small car which, with its transverse-mounted front four-cylinder engine and space for four occupants plus luggage, was to become a byword for economy of space and driving fun. That same year, sports car constructor John Cooper won his first Formula One World Championship title with Jack Brabham at the wheel. 50 years on, the MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50 evokes both the start of the triumphal path of the classic Mini as well as victory in the F1 Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championship for John Cooper’s racing team. This MINI special edition was inspired by John Cooper’s son, Mike. His signature appears on the facia and on one of the bonnet stripes. It will have a limited production run of 250 units and was unveiled to the public at the 2009 MINI United Festival in Silverstone. The car is based on the MINI John Cooper Works and driven by a 155 kW/211 hp four-cylinder engine with Twin- Scroll turbocharger and petrol direct injection. The production version of the MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50 features numerous exterior and interior details reflecting the racing pedigree of the brand. The bodywork of the MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50 comes in a new colour for MINI, namely Connaught Green – harking back to the famous colour of British race cars of the 1950s and 60s era. It is combined with the roof and bonnet stripes in Pepper White. The green with the white bonnet stripes mirror the colour concept of the Cooper F1 cars. The specification of these colours was provided by Mike Cooper giving the car its authenticity. Mike was consulted throughout the development by the MINI Design department. Mike’s full name is “John” Michael Cooper and he signs himself John Cooper. His signature appears on one bonnet stripe and on a facia plaque. Further accentuating the competitive character of the special edition are the John Cooper Works aerodynamics package and John Cooper Works Cross Spoke CHALLENGE light-alloy wheels in Jet Black. Designed for extreme sporting fun outside and in. Ensuring both an optimal view and a striking look are bi-xenon headlights with black interior surfaces and additional driving lights with black housings. The MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50 also features a plethora of carbon fibre features, among them the bonnet scoop on the bonnet, rear diffuser, exterior mirror caps and tailgate handle. These provide the link to the modern racing era. Special numbering on the side scuttles finishers identifies each MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50 as an individual entity of an exclusive limited series. Regarding the interior colour and trim, the racing theme is maintained by Carbon Black overlaid by subtle sporty red touches. The full leather sports seats come in black with red piping and the red theme is perpetuated with co-ordinating red knee-rolls, armrests and red stitching on the floor mats, gearshift & handbrake gaiters. Facia, and door grip finishers continue the carbon fibre theme, as does the John Cooper Works insert on the Sports Steering Wheel, which has an Alcantara rim conceived for sporty driving fun. Technology from the race track: four-cylinder engine with 155 kW/211 hp. Like the design features of the MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50, the power source under its bonnet is similarly defined by the racing competence of MINI John Cooper Works. This 1.6-litre four-cylinder unit is based on the engine of the MINI John Cooper Works CHALLENGE that was first fielded in the 2008 MINI CHALLENGE. It provides 155 kW/211 hp and develops maximum torque of 260 Newton metres between 1 850 and 5 600 rpm, which can even be briefly increased to 280 Nm thanks to an overboost feature. Power transmission is via a six-speed manual gearbox. All this enables the MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50 to accelerate from standstill to 100 km/h in just 6.5 seconds, going on to a top speed of 238 km/h. Average consumption in the EU test cycle is 6.9 litres per 100 kilometres, with a CO2 figure of 165 grams per kilometre. Also key to the superior performance of the MINI John Cooper Works World Championship 50 is its suspension technology, which is unique for this vehicle class. In addition to the McPherson struts on the front axle and a central-arm rear axle otherwise not found in the small car segment, electromechanical power steering (EPS) also helps guarantee safe and thrillingly precise handling. A Sport button (also standard) on the centre console activates a palpably more dynamic setting with sharper steering response and enhanced precision. In keeping with this, the Sport button also switches the accelerator pedal control map to an even sportier mode. The large sports brake system with red aluminium callipers guarantees short stopping distances. It responds with precision and brake power can be finely applied. Standard equipment also features Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) including Hill Assist, Dynamic Traction Control (DTC) and Brake Assist. It is enough for breathtaking performance: 0-62mph takes just 5.8 seconds while the top speed is limited to 155mph. On the official combined fuel cycle the FX50S returns 21.7mpg. It is fully compliant with Euro 5 emissions regulations and produces 310g/km of CO2. To control this amount of power with maximum safety and driver involvement Infiniti called on everything it knows about handling – including the SUV-first of Rear Active Steer. This electronically controlled system enhances agility at low speeds and further improves the car’s awesome stability at the very high cornering forces of which the FX50S is capable. Like the FX37S, 21in wheels and CDC damping are standard – along with all other features from that model. But the FX50S gets in addition its own exclusive technology designed to make life on board easier and safer. Around View Monitor utilises cameras around the car to generate a 360 degree bird’s eye view so not even the tightest parking space holds any fear for the driver. Intelligent Cruise Control uses laser sensors to maintain a set distance to the vehicle in front, at any speed from 0-112mph. And Intelligent Brake Assist could be a life-saver: when it detects that a collision with a car in front is imminent, it first warns the driver and then brakes the car automatically. All are standard fare on the FX50S; some rivals do not offer these features even as extra-cost options. Toyota’s new hybrid is on the road and on show in the UK After months of anticipation, the all-new Prius arrived in the UK this week and is already on the road and on public display. The latest generation of Toyota’s world-conquering hybrid has wasted no time in demonstrating its environmental credentials by taking part in the Revolve Eco-Rally, a showcase for low emissions and fuel-efficient cars that travelled from Brighton to London’s City Hall on Monday. Supported by the Low Carbon Vehicle Partnership and What Car? Magazine’s Green Awards, the event was organised by Revolve, an independent group that encourages and promotes sustainable transport. New Prius is also taking centre stage at the Bull Ring in Birmingham as a key feature of the shopping centre’s Green Week activities. Under the banner “Energy”, Prius is on public view until this Sunday. It is joined on the Toyota stand by its iQ and Yaris stablemates, two prime examples of the low emissions/fuel efficient performance being achieved with Toyota Optimal Drive technology. Next week Prius will move on to the Trafford Centre in Manchester, where it will be on show from 15 to 28 June. It will complete its debut tour at Bluewater, in Kent, from 29 June to 12 July. It was the first AVALANCHE generation in the mid 80s with its trendsetting body- and interior design which became a world-wide bestseller and laid the foundations of success for the Leonberg-based company. And ever since, this name is exclusively reserved for the masterpiece of the extensive GEMBALLA refining programme for Porsche 911 models. With the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R the chairman and founder Uwe Gemballa follows this success story and presents the face-lifted version of the current AVALANCHE-generation. Equipped with a spectacular automobile design and an auto body which has been broadened with Thyssen steel, the super sports car sets benchmarks for production quality and design vocabulary. But that is not enough: the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R offers elaborate, supreme technology and with 650 hp it delivers an enormous top speed of 332 km/h. Driving pleasure for highest demands. Fresh design for the super sports car Already at first glance, the AVALANCHE explicitly underlines its ties with the supreme sports car league. Especially designed gull wing doors and the new front headlights from the Carrera GT, leave significant visual accents. The same applies for the powerful metal extensions which were specially produced in a Thyssen Group subsidiary and then directly welded to the body shell. The GEMBALLA technicians developed a custom-made bonnet and side skirts as well. The front wings are replaced by a carbon version. Following the facelift of the current Porsche 911 induction engine models, GEMBALLA gives the AVALANCHE a visual refreshment as well. A part of this modernisation is the entirely re-designed front skirt. The integrated carbon front lip conveys the air to the large cooling slits and gives the car an even more lowered look. Also the rear section of the AVALANCHE contains a makeover: the most striking feature is the use of LED tail lamps from the current Porsche 911. Moreover, this is additionally enhanced by a new rear skirt. The integrated rear diffuser can either be selected with a varnish or in carbon fibre and offers space for the four end pipes of the sport exhaust system. Together with the carbon rear wing, it renders additional downthrust at the rear axle. When engineering the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R also great emphasis was put on the aerodynamic efficiency. Therefore, the body components were perfectly adjusted to each other. The result: An individual design in perfect surface quality which also reduces the lifting forces. Sensational performance due to elaborate technology In addition to the breath-taking shape of the AVALACHE, the GEMBALLA engine department developed a powerful performance enhancement for the serial gearing. The engine makeover includes a racing crankshaft, a titanium connecting rod, forged pistons and racing turbo chargers. Camshafts and cylinder heads are mechanically fabricated in precision work. The aluminium induction pipe and a carbon air box with sports air filter provide the optimal air supply. A further makeover feature and responsible for the sporty and powerful sound of the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R is the stainless steel - high-performance exhaust system with the optimised racing headers. After the extensive modifications, the super sports car has 650 hp / 478 kW at 6.200 rpm and 950 NM at 4.600 rpm. Thereby, the 4WD automobile accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in only 3.4 seconds and reaches a top speed of 332 km/h. And when this is not enough, the GEMBALLA-specialists offer even further engine types with performance enhancements up to 800 hp. Wheels and running gear - the combination for best road handling and a striking appearance The wheel/tyre combination of the AVALANCHE offers the optimal compromise between comfort and control. The multi-part and especially light aluminium wheels are delivered in size 9.0Jx20 with tyres measuring 245/30 ZR 20 for the front axle and 1.5Jx20 with 325/25 ZR 20 tyres at the rear axle. The high-performance braking system which was especially devised for the AVALANCHE GTR 650 EVO-R can be easily recognised by its red-painted brake callipers. The optimal deceleration and perfect gas pedal response is rendered by enlarged 6-piston brake callipers in connection with discs measuring 405 millimetres at the front axle and 4-piston brake callipers with 380mm-discs at the rear axle. Also, the running gear has been thoroughly modified. The new coilover kit was especially adjusted to these increased requirements. Four individually adjustable rebound dampers allow an individual fine tuning. Sport stabilisers and strut braces render additional torsional stiffness and therefore improve road handling. VIP lounge with motor sports atmosphere GEMBALLA completely re-designs the interior of the AVALANCHE and turns it into a VIP lounge with motor sports atmosphere. Engine tuning for the two Diesel models and the gasoline-powered 1.4 TB model is complemented by a strikingly styled aerodynamic-enhancement package. The latter comes with a general operating certificate, eliminating the need for individual technical inspections. Also available from NOVITEC are 18-inch wheels and a height-adjustable coil-over suspension. NOVITEC POWERJET 2 is the name of the recipe that increases power output of the MiTo with 1.4-liter turbocharged gasoline engine by 31 hp / 23 kW. Peak torque grows by 30 Nm. The plug-and-play auxiliary control unit can be installed in less than five minutes. The tuned MiTo produces 186 hp / 137 kW and is even more agile: With a sprint time of 7.4 seconds from rest to 100 km/h the tuned 1.4 TB bests its production counterpart by about 0.7 seconds. Sophisticated NOVITEC power tuning is also available for the two turbodiesel models. The easy-to-install NOVITEC POWERRAIL 5 module boosts power output of the 1.3 JTD model from standard 90 hp / 66 kW to 110 hp / 81 kW. The same auxiliary control module when installed in the MiTo 1.6 JTD produces an additional 24 hp / 17.7 kW. The tuning module also markedly increases peak torque by some 50 Nm.
